Bus stop physical info not matching API

The following bus stops have issues whereby the info on the physical stop flag does not match what is shown in online through API/iBus:

  • ‘Edgware Way’ should be ‘Spur Road/London Academy’ (490006432E and 490006432S)
  • ‘Edgware Station’ should be ‘Edgware Station/Station Road’ (490000070A)
  • ‘Park Croft’ should be ‘Burnt Oak Library/Watling Avenue’ (490014305S)
  • ‘Grove Farm’ should be ‘The Grove’ (1590046101)
  • ‘Pilgrims Lane Caravan Park’ and ‘Pilgrims Lane / Ltc Compound’ should both be ‘Pilgrims Lane/LTC Compound’ (15907075117 and 159007075118)
  • ‘Graham Hall Coachworks’ should be ‘Westerham Hill/London-Kent Border’ (2400HALL0001 and 2400HALL0002)
  • ‘Underhill’ should be ‘Barnet Hill/Underhill’ (490013897N)
  • ‘St Mary’s Lane’ should be ‘Clay Tye Road/East View’ (490006382N)
  • ‘St Mary’s Lane’ should be ‘Clay Tye Road/St Marys Lane’ (490006382S)
  • ‘Heritage Avenue’ should be ‘Heritage Avenue/Hendon Police College’ (490018871E and 490018871W)

  • ‘Grange Road’ (490007355W), ‘Edwin Road’ (490005114W) and ‘Deans Lane’ (490006006W) should all be ‘towards Burnt Oak Station’, not ‘towards Edgware or Kingsbury’
  • ‘Goldbeaters Grove’ (490007355E) should be ‘towards Mill Hill Broadway Station’ - correct in apps but still says ‘towards Grahame Park’ on website
  • ‘Hendon Magistrates Court’ (490014471S) should be ‘towards Brent Cross, Cricklewood Or Hendon Central’ not ‘towards Brent Cross, Cricklewood Or Golders Green’
  • ‘Hendon Station’ (490001148A) should be ‘towards Hendon Central, Middlesex University or Golders Green’ not ‘towards Golders Green’
  • ‘Arterial Road/West Thurrock’ (1590012501) bus stop icon missing from map on website/apps
  • ‘Woodstock Avenue’ (490014904E) should be ‘towards Golders Green Station’ not ‘towards Hampstead Heath’
  • ‘Hoop Lane’ (490015322GR) and ‘Finchley Road’ (490006838GT) should be ‘towards Golders Green Station or Hampstead Heath’ not ‘towards Hampstead Heath’
  • ‘Knightswood Road’ should be ‘Ingrebourne Hill Country Park’ (490008878N and 490003339S)

Any idea why this is?

@FraserAB So how do these compare with the on-bus iBus displays (new ones or old ones) and their pronunciation?

@briantist the on-bus displays show the old stop names, so I imagine something has gone wrong with the process/relationship between the system used for making physical changes and the one used to make digital changes.

Another one - ‘Coomber Way/Beddington Lane’ should be ‘Prologis Business Park/Beddington’ (490018885W and 490018885E)

Another one - ‘The Dysart’ should be ‘Cedar Heights/Petersham Gate’ (490013340W and 490013340E)

With apologies to the late Mr Morecombe, you are tagging all the right people on this forum but asking the wrong questions. :slightly_smiling_face:

The ultimate reference for the stop info is the NaPTAN database which is maintained by DfT. The incorrect stop data which you flag is present in that database. Changing the database appears to involve the many organisations responsible for stops (TfL in this case) and DfT.

The overall system seems to be complex and prone to errors which often never get fixed. To be fair, there are very many UK stops and the percentage of errors is quite small. Like you, I assumed the data must be “perfect” until I started reading this forum.

Thanks for reporting these issues. It will take us some time to address these, so please bear with us. There are several systems and teams involved in managing bus stop data, so we will need to investigate each of these to determine in which system the correction should be made.

Taking the Cedar Heights/Petersham Gate bus stops, for example, it looks like this needs to be corrected in both our asset management system and in NaPTAN, which are managed by two separate teams. But the issue may be different for other examples you’ve provided.

I can’t really give an indication of when these will be resolved, but we’ll try to get these fixed as soon as we can.

Unlike timetables, bus stop data rarely change and are fully within TfL’s control. Permanent changes to a bus stop location/name (or a new stop) incur cost and must be subject to TfL planning, budgeting, etc. Effective quality control requires a unique bus stop reference database that is updated as a requirement of TfL’s quality management system when a bus stop change is signed off as completed. That is simply good business practice.

@LeonByford Regular forum users appreciate the efforts of you and your TfL colleagues to correct data errors but it seems to me that there is a “right question” to ask a senior TfL manager: why are your efforts necessary and dependent on user complaints on this forum?
