600 series (school) routes.

I noticed last week that about 40 of these had disappeared from my bus sequence database update. Their XML timetables were included in last week’s zip as usual. As it was half term and they are now back I assume they were absent from the API because there was no service last week. Is that a bug in the API system or intentional?

If the latter it seems a poor decision. Anyone searching on the website for one of them last week would assume the route does not exist. They don’t run at weekends, nor do many normal routes run on Sunday, but I don’t think that prevents a positive search result (obviously without any live arrivals).

Hi @Ajebz - I’ve checked the source data on both these routes with @MScanlon and we can’t see those stops listed. Also Countdown is not returning any predictions for those routes at those stops. Can you please advise why they are believed to be missing?

Regarding the 40 route, it’s indeed unusual that predictions were previously available for that stop but are no longer available. However, given that it passes by the bus stop in question and the distance between stops appears longer, it’s reasonable to expect that it should stop at “Westmoreland Road” as it did before, unless there have been recent changes.

Similarly, concerning the 189 route, since it also passes by the same bus stop and the distance between stops seems elongated due to its omission, it’s logical to assume it should also serve Priory Road.

But I just use maps and other resources I can find to back up my belief.

Jump to 20:20. It shows the bus stopping at Priory Road but if you go back, the Ibus annoucement sounded for Belsize Road at 18:48 but not for Priory Road. Until Quex Road. But again this is what i can find.

Judging from the JP Datastore xml files, Priory Road was included in the file with “SCN” 59516, which was present in downloads up to 13/02/24. The next file with “SCN” 59519 excluded it in downloads between 06/02/24 and 26/02/24 then it magically reappeared in the file’s last two appearances, on 05/03/24 and 12/03/24. More recent files 59520 (present 12/03/24 to 26/03/24) and the current one 59521 exclude them again. It is almost as if an error was corrected on 59519 but the correction lost when new files came in. I note that the stop after Quex Road has a similar name - Priory Park Road - but surely this is not leading to confusion.

Westmoreland Road similarly drops in and out for the 40. Again, old Google Street Maps images show 35, 40 and 45 all stopping there.

My guess is that sometimes stops get closed and removed from the stop sequence and that sometimes a template from the closure period is picked up for a new timetable when the stop is actually live and kicking.

I put “SCN” in quotes as these days it is pretty meaningless, bearing no relationship to the SCNs in the working timetables, apart from clearly forming part of a sequence of incremented pseudo-SCNs which started from 59508, a genuine SCN for the route back in August 2021. Since then we have had a run from 59509 to 59521, some of which are genuine SCNs for other routes. The mismatch between Datastore files and WTTs is not helpful in sorting out anomalies. I have no idea why they once lined up and no longer do, other than that the link has no operational significance so nobody bothers with it any more.

Your guess seems very plausible. I reported last year that the K4 omitted a stop for months and was shown on diversion whilst I sat on K4s operating the normal route. That stop had indeed previously been closed to all routes with everything except the K4 restored promptly when the diversion ended.

The 40/Westmoreland Road issue has been identified as a mistake in the source data system for schedules and will be re-added.

The 189/Priory Road issue has been reported back to the bus data team and we’ll let you know how that proceeds.
