Thread transferred to Problems with /Line/Route/Sequence 7/7/20-31/12/20 to keep thread size manageable

Can any of you techies on here recommend who help me? I want to analyse bus speeds on all routes through Hackney over last12 months. The purpose is to identify whether the recent introduction of Low TrafficNeighbourhoods has impacted on bus speeds. Local knowledge is that they’ve caused periods of congestion on TLRN roads & the question is whether that is apparent from bus speeds.

Welcome @BillPD

You might be able to get that information from the Waze data feed. It does collect conjecstion information,

There is also data from TomTom

I think the problem you are going to have is to start with a definition of “all bus routes though hackney” - if you look at https://allthebuses.github.io/ there is a system that @ Edgemaster has created.

So, the larger question will revolve around:

  • Do you mean all bus services that pass though Hackney, those within Hackney or are mainly within?
  • Does this include School Buses?
  • Do you mean the average speed, or the cruising speed?
  • If a bus runs outside Hackney as well as inside it, do you only care about the Hackney section for the measurement of speed?
  • Is this during peak time or 24/7? There is often no congestion at night.
  • What about buses that have to wait to prevent themselves going ahead of the timetable (which is unlawful).

The whole point about the changes to roads is to remove traffic from the network, it’s the opposite of Induced Demand Induced demand - Wikipedia

I would see The Science Is Clear: More Highways Equals More Traffic. Why Are DOTs Still Ignoring It? – Streetsblog USA

It’s always worth remembering that the plural of anecdote isn’t “data”.

Also, any analysis over the last 12 months is going to suffer from the confounding effects of Covid on traffic generally. Buses were often sitting around at bus stops during the first lockdown as well because there is little traffic (and few passengers) to fill the running time. People were actively being discouraged from using buses at that time and plenty are reluctant to risk them even now. That itself could have boosted car traffic - another confounding factor.

I suspect that most Hackney bus routes are high frequency, which means that individual buses are not tied to a timetable. Regulating gaps in service is more for those services important than having an individual bus where the schedule says it is supposed to be. Of course if you could achieve the second you would also have achieved the first but in much of London it is pretty obvious that you cannot rely on that.
