But this fails

Because, quickly looking at https://api.tfl.gov.uk/Journey/Meta/Modes shows that “train” isn’t a mode (see also “public-bus”).

Any chance the docs could reflect a working list of modes.

Yes, public-bus should be bus, train should be national-rail
Also cablecar (cable-car), river (river-bus, river-tour)
Missing cycle-hire, elizabeth-line, interchange-keep-sitting, interchange-secure, replacement-bus, taxi
